A Grade :

ROUND 8: Walkerville 15-16 (106) def Eastern Park 13-15 (93)

Having snapped a 3-game losing streak the previous week, with a well deserved 4-goal win over Pembroke, the Cats travelled out to Eastern Park for their round 8 clash. The match was set up as a classic "4-point" battle, with the 2 teams locked in a 7-team tie for second position, in what has fast become a hotly contested Division 2 in 2010.

In cold and wintry conditions, the Cats kicked with the aid of the wind in the first quarter and could not have started better. With the midfield well on top, Walkerville slammed home 8 first quarter goals, to head to quarter time with a 7-goal lead. Having endured 2 late withdrawals from the team, which resulted in Ben Butler having to play both A's and B's, this was the perfect way for the team to respond.

The job however, was far from done. As Eastern Park fought back strongly in the second quarter, to narrow the margin to 3-goals at half time. The back six held up well against the pressure however, with Nick Flood again playing well, ably assisted by Lee Henderson, James Taylor and co, allowing the Cats to head to the main break feeling confident.

With the wind at our backs in the third quarter, the Cats were unable to take full advantage, as to their credit, Eastern Park fought hard to stay in the contest. Ryan Klemasz and Trent Hill were again important, allowing Walkerville to maintain a 14-point advantage at the last change.

The pressure was well and truly on however, as Walkerville were kicking into the breeze (which had dropped off slightly). The Walkies boys battled on courageously however, controlling the majority of the final quarter, to hold on to a well earned 13 point victory.

Better players were Madden, Flood, Dyer, Ramsay, Delvins

Goal Kickers: Law 3, Dyer 2, Stringer, Scanlon, Ramsay, Beard, Priest, Klamasz, Hill, Madden, Delvins, Eagleton 1

ROUND 7: Walkerville 14.19 103 def Pembroke OS 12.8 80

Keen to avenge poor performances over the previous couple of weeks the Cats travelled to Pembroke for Round 7 action. With the Annual Ball to be held that night and coach Peter Scheuffele celebrating his 1,000th game as player/coach, the team was looking for a turnaround in form. The first quarter set the tone for what was to come, as the Cats were well on top but could only take a 3-7 to 2-0 lead into quarter time.

In fact, Walkerville dominated for much of the day, but inaccurate kicking saw the team hold-off Pembroke by only 23 points. 33 scoring shots to 20 for the match, indicative of a return to form, with Stringer, Klemasz, Patterson and Law controlling the midfield, while James Taylor was solid in defence. The victory took the team into a 7-way tie for second position on the ladder, with a 4-3 win-loss count.

Better Players were Taylor, Klemasz, Patterson, Stringer and Law.

Goal Kickers: Gould, Parish, Law 3, Hill, Eagleton 2, Cannane 1

ROUND 6: Rostrevor OC 18.16 124 def Walkerville 7.12 54

Walkerville travelled to Rostrevor for the first of a 3-match road trip. After a slow start, which saw the Cats down by 3-goals early, the side was able to slowly swing the momentum, to head to quarter time down on the scoreboard but with some confidence. Walkerville dominated much of the second quarter, with Peter Mudge providing a good target up forward, with 3-goals for the day and Rob Parish adding another 2 to his total.

Heading into half time with a one-goal lead, things were looking positive. This unfortunately, is where the positives end. A very disappointing second half enabled Rostrevor to run over the top of the Cats, eventually coming away with an 11-goal victory.

Better Players were Mudge, Madden, Flood, Bowman, Lindner

Goal Kickers: Mudge 3, Parish 2, Stringer, Eagleton 1

 UNI KNOCK OVER CATS

Round 5 : A GRADE

Walkerville 7-14 (56) lost to Adelaide Uni 19-12 (126)

After a promising start to the season, Walkerville faced off against the as yet undefeated Adelaide Uni at the Cattery on Saturday. Unfortunately however, Uni got the jump on the home side in the first quarter, slotting through 5 unanswered goals in a disappointing opening.

In a promising sign however, Walkerville bounced back in the second quarter, dominating the play for the majority of the quarter, to kick 5 goals to 2, to bring the margin back to just 15 points at the half time break. From there however, it was all one way traffic, with another goal-less quarter, seeing the margin blow out to 52 points by 3-quarter time. The final margin would end up being 70 points, in a major disappointment for the Cats.

However, the team will be looking to bounce back strong this week against Rostrevor, and still hold a place in the top 5.

Goals: Madden 2, Gould, Eagleton, Hill, Dyer & Parish.

 WALKERVILLE FALL JUST SHORT

Round 4 : A GRADE

Walkerville 11-6 (72) lost to Flinders Park 11-10 (76)

Coming off an excellent start to the season, the Cats travelled to Flinders Park, with a 3-0 record and equal top of the table. However, this was always going to be a big challenge, as Flinders Park have been very tough rivals in recent years. The Cats welcomed young Tom Williams into the line-up for his first A grade game for the Walkerville Football Club, after a few very impressive performances in the B's.

In good conditions for football, neither side could grab any degree of ascendancy throughout the afternoon. Rob Parish played another important role, kicking 2 early goals and 4 for the day, to provide a great target up forward. While Ben Butler, playing just his second A grade game for the club and Geoff Munn chipped in for 2 apiece.

It was a see-sawing battle, with the Cats holding a slender lead at the first and third breaks, while Flinders Park went to the main break just ahead. It was always going to come down to the final quarter, in what seems to be a common occurrence for the Cats in 2010. Unfortunately however, this week was to be the week where we couldn't quite make up ground, with Flinders Park kicking 3 early goals in the last quarter, before the Cats fought back to get within 4 points. As the final siren sounded, Walkerville were making a run down the wing, fighting hard to the end. Stu Callary was in great form and was a standout, while Daniel Stringer, Ryan Klemasz and Trent Hill continued their run of recent solid performances.

Whilst disappointing to slip to 3-1 on the season, the Cats must continue to play with confidence as they head into a crucial clash with the top of the table and undefeated Adelaide Uni this week.

C GRADE

Walkerville C grade rocked up to the game with plenty of confidence after winning the first 2 rounds. With the coaching staff having some knowledge of the opposition there was an air of excitement in the rooms as final preparations took place.

In the 1st qtr Walkerville had control of the ball in the first 10mins, but could not convert on the scoreboard with some good running through the midfield and the wings.

Then things turned very quickly. Big Al Williams came of his line across half back attacking a 50/50 contest 'like the Titanic in icy waters FULL STEAM AHEAD'only to go down quicker than what the Titanic did on that fateful night! (He is ok now, just a severe case of concussion).

With a quick rejigging of the team, the side continued to play well for the rest of the qtr going in at Qtr time down 3 goals to 1!

The 2nd qtr saw the flood gates open, and the backline was the ones copping it! Flinders Park went on a 10 goal rampage to Walkervilles 1! With the ball coming down with such frequency the backline did a good job to hold them to only 10 goals. 'Marto' Skinner, 'H' Murdoch & 'Lara' Croft battled gallantly across HB, while Daly was stellar at Full Back considering the delivery the forward line was getting.

The panic and disposal shown by us at times was extremely disappointing, especially when instructions were given at 1/4 time to take control of the game when we have the ball!

Half time called for a better commitment from the players wanting an urgency to direct players with & without the ball and to put the body on the line and not be scared to lay a tackle!

The 3rd qtr was a better effort with intent to attack the ball in 50/50 contests and feel a body in the tackle. SOS & J.Dunn continued to run up & down their wings giving our forwards opportunities, while 'Freddy' Winter continued his ruthless hunt on the ball & opposition players. But still easy marks were dropped allowing easy turnovers to happen, which usually resulted in easy goals.

A better qtr by the Cats saw 'BJ' Felice kick our only goal for the qtr, while the opposition put 5 on the board.

The last qtr proved to be very similar to the 2nd with Flinders Park going on a goal spree, as they proved to be a fitter & more skillful team, giver their forwards service on a 'silver platter'!

'Spud' Munn played a galant game all day on a taller more experienced player, continually getting 1st hand on the ball around the ground. 'Freddy' Winter was continually found at the bottom of packs & would've walked away knowing he had played a bruising game. 'Mitch' Fox did a great 'run with' role on a player who should be roving for their A grade. The backline with continual bombardment did a good job in tough conditions.

With that behind us & knowing where we need to be if we are to be anywhere we look forward to the challenge of Adelaide Uni in a Triple Header at Walkerville Oval.

Goals: R.Armes 2, BJ Felice 1

Best: 'Mitch' Fox (Sussex), 'Freddy' Winter (Meal), 'Spud' Munn (Meal), 'H' Murdock (Jug) & 'Tommy' Daly (Jug) Special mention: 'Lara' Croft, 'Marto' Skinner, SOS & Hyphen!

Round 3 : Cats Home In A Thriller

A GRADE : Walkerville 14-11 (95) def Modbury 13-15 (93)

B GRADE : Walkerville 14-16 (100) def Modbury 5-8 (38)

Walkerville continued their unbeaten start to season 2010 with a thrilling 2 point victory over Modbury in Round 3 at the Cattery. In a tight battle all day, the Cats led 7-1 to 5-2 at quarter time, after a highly entertaining, free-flowing first quarter.

However, from there, the match tightened right up, as the conditions deteriorated with bursts of rain. By the half time break, Walkerville maintained the lead 8-4 to 7-5. Ryan Klemasz was back to his best, in conditions that suited him, while Stringer was again solid.

Modbury came hard at the Cats in the third quarter and swung the momentum in their favour. Trailing by 7 points at 3/4 time, the job was in front of the Walkies boys. However, with Trent Hill leading the way, Adam Law elusive in kicking 4 goals and Rob Parish providing a good target, on his way to 3 goals, the Cats worked their way back into the lead, up by 3 points in the dying seconds of the game. However, Modbury had one last tilt at victory, marking on the siren, to have a shot at the win. The shot would narrowly fade left, to give the Cats a thrilling 2 point win and maintain equal top position on the ladder, heading to round 4 and an away clash with Flinders park.

A Grade Report Round 2: Walkerville def PHOS Camden

After the solid first up win over SPOC, the Cats travelled away to meet PHOS in round 2. This was set up as a huge test early in the season, as PHOS had led division 2 for the majority of the 2009 season. In a physical and highly entertaining encounter, very little could separate the sides for the majority of the day, with Walkerville leading narrowly at the first and last changes, while PHOS took the half time lead by a goal. Wade Ryan returned to the team after missing round 1 with a wedding, while captain Paddy Cannane returned from injury. Daniel Stringer consolidated his great early season form, with another good display in the ruck, while Trent Hill, Peter Mudge and Damien Eagleton were important. PHOS kept coming at the Cats all day, but in an encouraging sign, we were able to hold them at bay and consolidate in the last quarter. For the second week in a row, the Cats were able to over-run the opposition, to come away with an 18 point victory, in a perfect lead up to an eventful Cocktail Night. 2 from 2 is a good start, but many more tough challenges await.

A Grade Report Round 1: Walkerville def SPOC

The Cats started season 2010 against a familiar foe, with St Peters coming to the Cattery in a rematch of the 2009 Division 3 Grand Final. The side took on a new look to that which won the premiership, with no less than 7 new faces including , Chris Clonan, Matt Dyer, Nick Flood, Nick Moretti, Rob Parish, Kode Patterson and the returning Brodie O’Dea. The Cats took a while to gel however, with goals coming at a premium in the first half. Rob Parish was elusive up forward and showed great promise, but unfortunately his kicking boots were left at home, while Stringer was as dominant as ever in the ruck, giving first use to the midfielders. At half time, the Cats were down by a couple of goals, having only kicked 2 majors for the half. The second half was a completely different story, as Walkies gradually swung the momentum of the match in the 3rd quarter, before running over their opponents in the last to come out with a 17 point victory. Chris Clonan showed his value through the midfield, Rob Parish kicked 3 goals, while Geoff Munn and Adam Law added 2 apiece. The home side were cheered home by a strong home-crowd, with many ladies turning out to enjoy the first ladies day of 2010.

C Grade Report: First Up Win For The Cats

On Saturday the C Grade had the pleasure of kicking the season off at 10:15am as the first game of a triple header against SPOC, despite the early start time the cats showed they were awake as well as switched on as they kicked two goals before SPOC knew what hit them. From there the first half turned into a battle the sides going goal for goal. At half time it was only the 2 goal burst at the start of the game at allowed Walkerville a 14 point lead.

Walkerville came out of half time with the same attitude as the first and again kicked two quick goals and from there the game was over. Besides a well celebrated goal late in the 4th quarter by Shannon Smith (2 goals), there were no more goals scored by either team. Well done to the back six for keeping SPOC goalless is the last half. Walkerville eventually won the game 9.9.63 to SPOC 4.8.32

The C grade were welcoming 5 new players to the club, To Shannon Smith, Hayden Murdoch, David Coad, Ryan "Heff" Gerlach and Mitch Fox welcome and well done on your first game, hopefully this is 1 on many wins in season 2010.
